F&M Dancers Grow as Artists and Leaders
While preparing for the F&M Dance Company fall concert, Liam McEwan 鈥27 and Izzy Diaz 鈥28 found opportunities for self-expression, leadership, and connection.
Over three nights of shows, members of the Dance Company performed choreography by F&M dance faculty and guest artists鈥攖he culmination of a semester鈥檚 worth of work.
鈥淚鈥檝e seen the work the dancers put in, and it makes me extremely happy to be part of an amazing program that keeps growing each year,鈥 said McEwan, a dance and psychology joint major and president of the Dance Company.
Joining the Dance Company during his first year on campus gave McEwan, who has been dancing for 13 years, the chance to continue exploring the art of dance at a college level.
鈥淚鈥檝e been able to grow exponentially as a dancer, choreographer, and teacher,鈥 McEwan said.
For Diaz, participating in dance has been a source of community and connection from a young age and she knew she wanted it to be part of her college experience.
鈥淢y top priority [at F&M] was getting involved in the dance community,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 knew that I would find my people there.鈥
Diaz added that joining the Dance Company has shaped her college experience in other, more unexpected ways, presenting leadership opportunities as early as her first year and changing the way she engages with subject material in her other courses.
鈥淚 have been given the opportunity to work with our amazing professors, as well as stepping into a leadership role as a choreographer for the 2025 Spring Dance Concert,鈥 Diaz said.
She intends to double major in dance and psychology and added that studying both has revealed unexpected ways in which the disciplines complement each other. 鈥淎s I dance, I am actively combining my knowledge of movement and the body-mind connection.鈥
